Instructions

  • Before children hear the story, facilitator asks children if they have ever gone on a trip? Where did they go? What was it like?

  • Children sit down for storytime and listen to the story, Austin, Lost in America: A Geography Adventure.

  • Children break up in teams. Each team picks a card from the east coast bag and the west coast bag.

  • They place the cards on the map. (one on the east coast, one on the west coast)

  • They select a race car and put it on the city on the east coast.

  • Each team takes turns rolling one dice.

  • The number they roll on the dice tell them how many hundreds of miles they can drive. Example: they roll a "1" they move 100 miles. The roll of "2", they move 200 miles.

  • The team must decide the fastest way to get to their city on the west coast. They must end on a yellow dot or a gas station. If they roll a number that doesn't give them enough miles to reach the next dot or gas station, they do not move on that turn.
