Pajama Storytime: Sleepy Time Animals

Start with a wonderful picture book about the sleeping behavior of nine animals called If I Were a Kangaroo by Mylisa Larsen. I feel the book would be very received for our pajama storytime as the book talks about the bedtime rituals of animals from whales to otters, squirrels to gorillas. The book can be used to help teach the benefit of a good night's sleep and to share STEM animal facts.

Prep:

  • Print out STEM cards on white cardstock.

  • Get information books out on kangaroo, whale, chick, squirrel giraffe, bat, otter, spider and gorilla.

Introduction:

1. Children should get comfortable on the story rug as the librarian asks the kids some questions as an ice breaker:

  • Who loves baby animals?

  • Whop has trouble falling asleep now and again?

"After we read the story, we will play a game that will show you how baby animals fall asleep".

2. Librarian reads the book, If I Were a Kangaroo by Mylisa Larsen.

3. Each child is given a Sleepy Time STEM Card. (Copy on the tool page). Children will be asked to color their animal at the craft tables. There are nine cards. If there are more than nine children, print out a second set on white cardstock. Provide a book that children can use to help them see what their animal looks like.

4. Have everyone come back to the story rug. Children will take turns and tell eveyone what their animals "sleeping tip" is and allow them to show everyone their art work. They are:

1. Kangaroo: Have a big glass of milk before bedtime.

2. Whale: Have a nice long bath before bedtime.

3. Chick: Make a cozy tent with your blankets and crawl inside.

4. Squirrel: Make a big tail out of a blanket or pillow and hug it tight.

5. Giraffe: You are never too old to take a nap! Studies show that grown-up nappers can be better

thinkers.Count to ten and then resume your normal sleep position.

6. Bat: Lie on your back, carefully slide your head and shoulders off the bed, and spread your arms.

7. Otter: Lie on your back and hug a pillow or stuffed animal to your chest.

8. Spider: Ask for a piggyback ride to bed.

9. Gorilla: Make a nest of your blankets and snuggle in.

5. Children take their STEM card home with them.
