Humpty Dumpty

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

Prep: Set up overhead project/computer with YouTube video below:

Print out airplane template on tool page. (print on regular copy paper)

Have kids sit on the rug.

Before Reading–Listen to the original Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme with kids, then ask:

  • “What was Humpty Dumpty doing on the wall?”

  • “Why did Humpty Dumpty fall?”

  • “Why couldn’t ‘all the king’s horses and all the king’s men’ put Humpty Dumpty back together again?”

  • “What would YOU have done to help Humpty Dumpty after his fall?”

Have kids sit at the rug and read the book, After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back up Again by Dam Santat.

A clever take on the classic nursery rhyme with themes of overcoming fears and resilience. Beautifully big pages make it good for large groups. I think the message strikes home the most with kids in grades 1 – 4.

For STEM - talk about the four forces of aerodynamics. Print out is located on the tool page. (Four Forces of Aerodynamics)

Activity for ALL: Have kids make paper airplanes. If weather permits, have kids go outside and race each other.

Give kids a copy of the airplane template and decorate. Then kids will construct their planes.

After the Fall deals with the idea of flight. Create a paper airplane and learn about the four forces of aerodynamics that allow a plane (or a bird) to fly. Airplane template is on tool page. Or allow kids to make their own.

My Notes: Might be a good idea to cut out the sold perimeter lines from the airplane template. This will make the craft go faster and kids will not need scissors. Kids liked to write their names on the planes. Not enough time to decorate the planes.
