Chef Storytime - Food Around the World: India

Children like cooking because it is such a fun hands-on activity! And there is data that shows kids will each healthy foods like vegetables if they help prepare the food. In this storytime, share a book like What's On Your Plate?: Exploring the world of food by Whitney Stewart. Each double-sided page shares great information about a country and a recipe to make an ethnic dish. Another great book is Living in India by Chloe Perkins. If you choose this book, don't feel you need to read every page. J ER 954 PER


Have kids sit at the story rug. Ask them what their favorite foods are? Have they every made anything at home? Ask them what the word customs means? Many families make special foods that are handed down from generation to generation. Share examples of different foods around the world. A Lassi is a very popular yogurt based drink that originates in the Punjab regions of India and Pakistan. They somewhat resemble a milkshake or smoothie and are made the same way, by blending the ingredients. Share information on the book, Living in India by Chloe Perkins.



Banana Lassi (LAH-see)

Indian Yogurt Drink

Recipe for 2 servings


Ingredients:

2 ripe bananas, peeled

1 cup plain yogurt

1/2 cup milk

1 tablespoon honey

Pinch of cinnamon and cardamon


Instructions:

Combine ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Serve at room temperature or over ice in your favorite glass, and sip through a straw if you'd like.

Notes from 2019:

The program was set up in three teams. The first team said the basic recipe was to sour. The second team did double the honey. The third team added extra banana, extra honey, extra yogurt and extra milk. They said it was awesome, terrific.
