1. Introduction:

Welcome to Toddler storytime. My name is Ms. Debbie. I am so glad to see you today. Our storytime is designed to participated by everyone. We will share books, rhymes, and songs with your children. We encourage everyone to participate, but no worries if this doesn't happen. Sometimes when a child sees you participate, they might join in, but if your child is not in the mood, that is okay too. Our storytime can tend to be a little chaotic, but that is okay too. If you child becomes disruptive, please take your child outside the program and then join us again when your child has settled down. This is normal, it is part of the process. So let's start with our opening song.

2. Opening Song:

How Many Friends are Here Today?

lyrics:

How many friends are here today?

How many friends are here today?

Let's count it out!

Let's clap it out!

Let's dance it out!

There are _____friends on their feet!

Now it's time to take your seat!

3.Early Literacy Aside: Explain

"Children need background knowledge, or general knowledge about the world, to later understand what they read." (Ghoting and Martin-Diaz, 2013, p. 229). Background knowledge includes knowing about things like today's storytime about winter. "Children with strong background knowledge are more likely to understand what they read in the fourth grade an up"(Ghoting and Martin-Diaz, 2013, p. 229). Talking with children about everything they see, like winter, will help them to develop their knowledge.

4. Theme Talk:

Our storytime today is winter. What do you like to do when it is snowing? What kinds of clothes do you wear when it snows? What is the weather like in the winter?

5. Action Rhyme - fingerplay:

We repeated this rhyme a few times.  Children making pretend snowballs and throwing them at the librarian.

Snowflake, Snowflake

Snowflake, snowflake dance around, Snowflake, snowflake, touch the ground, Snowflake, snowflake soft and white, Snowflake, snowflake snowball fight!

(Snow, 2014)

7. Shakers

Shake Your Shaker

(to the tune of London Bridge)

Lyrics:

Shake your shaker in the air,

Shake it here, shake it there.

Shake your shaker in the air,

Shake your shaker.

Shake it high and shake it low,

Shake it yes, shake it no.

Shake it high and shake it low,

Shake your shaker.

Shake it up and shake it down,

Rub your shaker on the ground.

Shake it up and shake it down,

Shake your shaker.

Shake it near and shake it far,

Drive your shaker like a car.

Shake it near and shake it far,

Shake your shaker.

Shake it fast and shake it slow,

Shake it stop, shake it go.

Shake it fast and shake it slow,

Shake your shaker.

8. Action Song:

Little Blue Sled

Lyrics:

Bumping up and down in my little blue sled.

Bumping up and down in my little blue sled.

Bumping up and down in my little blue sled.

Won’t  you be me darling?

Snow coming down on my little blue sled.

Snow coming down on my little blue sled.

Snow coming down on my little blue sled.

Won’t you be my darling?

Waving to my friends on my little blue sled.

9. Nonfiction Book:

I thought you might like to see real pictures of Winter. Our next book is called Winter by Julie Murray.

10. Early literacy Aside: Example

As you read books with your child, encourage them to explore the book with you. You'll notice I did not read the last book from cover to cover. I pointed out a few facts that I thought they would be interested in, and want to talk about. Information books are for this. When children share information they know about subjects like our Winter theme, they are developing their background knowledge, which will help their comprehension.

11. Felt Board:

13. Early Literacy: Empower

"Keep reading short, simple, and often. Toddlers frequently have shorter attention spans than babies. Look for text that is short and simple. Read a little bit, several times a day" (Reading Rockets, 2018)

14. Closing Song:

Goodbye Bubbles

(Librarian will blow bubbles while the parents/caregiver and children sing the song.
